Interest exploration matching
Method interest-exploration-2026-10-14.1 compares preferences with work activities. It supports a conversation about possibilities.
What goes into the index
Your completed StudyIndex career interest questionnaire provides six preference ratings from 0 to 100. The questionnaire uses original StudyIndex questions to explore the work activities that interest you.
O*NET occupational interest profiles provide six corresponding source scores on a 1–7 scale. Only active occupations with all six confirmed values in their current published source release are eligible for matching.
The calculation
User ratings are divided by 100. Source ratings are mapped from 1–7 to 0–1 by subtracting 1 and dividing by 6. Cosine similarity compares the direction of these six-value vectors. The result is rounded to an index from 0 to 100.
The largest shared contributions are shown as reasons. Equal scores use alphabetical order. A zero vector or a user preference spread smaller than 10 points does not produce a forced shortlist. The directory's interest filter selects source occupational scores of at least 4 on the 1–7 scale.
What the number means
It describes similarity between interest patterns. It is not a probability of admission, an ability assessment, a psychological diagnosis, or a forecast of employment or salary. Mechanical practice scores are not used to exclude careers.
Education requirements, finances, geography, licensing, accessibility and personal circumstances need separate consideration. No career is declared unavailable to you by this index.
Privacy and reproducibility
Matches use the completed interest result owned by the current browser session. Someone else's attempt ID cannot be supplied to this page. Test definitions, scoring versions and source releases are retained. Recommendation snapshots save the method, preference profile, source release IDs, scores and reasons; an owner-only history link preserves earlier recommendations. Deleting the associated assessment also deletes its recommendation snapshots.
